Okay, so today I wanted to mess around with that “Spike Volleyball” game everyone’s been talking about. I’d seen some gameplay videos, and it looked pretty intense, so I figured I’d give it a shot and see what all the fuss was about. First thing’s first: figuring out these controls!

Getting Started
I jumped right in, no tutorials, just straight into a quick match. Big mistake. I was mashing buttons like a maniac, my players were diving all over the place – mostly into the net. It was a mess. Clearly, a more, uh, methodical approach was needed.
Figuring Out the Basics
So, I paused the game (thank goodness for that) and dug into the settings menu. Found the control scheme, finally! Here’s the basic breakdown, at least as far as I could tell:
- Movement: Pretty standard stuff, left stick on my controller to move my player around the court. Easy peasy.
- Serving: This took a few tries. Seemed like you hold a button to power up, then release to serve. I kept whiffing it at first, sending the ball dribbling pathetically into the net. Timing is key, I guess.
- Receiving/Digging: This was tricky. It felt like you had to be in the perfect spot, and then press… I think it was the right bumper? My player would do a little dive and sometimes get the ball up. Lots of flailing, though.
- Setting: okay, I pressed Y and it seems work.
- Spiking: Ah, the good stuff. This seemed to involve a combination of timing and aiming. You had to jump (I think with the A button?), then hit another button (X?) while in the air. When I actually connected, it felt awesome. Most of the time, though, I was sending the ball flying out of bounds.
- Blocking: This was probably the hardest part. You have to get right up to the net, anticipate the opponent’s spike, and then… jump and press something? I managed to block a couple of times, purely by accident.
Practice Makes… Slightly Better
After spending a good hour just practicing in an empty court, I started to get the hang of it. I wouldn’t say I was good, but at least I wasn’t a complete liability anymore. I could consistently serve, mostly receive, and occasionally spike with some degree of accuracy.
I even tried a few online matches. Let’s just say I got crushed. Repeatedly. But hey, I scored a few points! And I didn’t completely embarrass myself. (Okay, maybe a little.)
Overall, the controls in “Spike Volleyball” are definitely challenging. There’s a steep learning curve, and it’s not the kind of game you can just pick up and master in a few minutes. But, it’s also pretty rewarding when you finally start to string together some decent plays. I’m definitely going to keep practicing – maybe one day I’ll even win a match!
