Okay, so today I wanted to get better at setting in volleyball. I’ve been playing for a while, but my sets are, well, let’s just say they’re not always where they need to be. So, I decided to dedicate some time to actually practicing and figuring this out.

Getting Started
First, I grabbed my volleyball and headed to the park. Luckily, there was a wall I could use. It’s not the same as setting to a teammate, but it’s good for getting the basic motion down.
The Practice
- I started by just tossing the ball up to myself and trying to set it against the wall. At first, it was pretty rough. My hands weren’t in the right position, and the ball was going all over the place. I really work on hand shape.
- Then, I make a change and remembered something I saw online about making a “triangle” with my hands. I focused on that, keeping my thumbs and index fingers forming that shape above my forehead. This seemed to help a bit with control.
- I try to push the ball, not slap it. That was another key thing. I was trying to “hit” the ball before, but it’s more about a controlled push from your fingertips. Also I adjusted my feet position, and keep my body facing to wall.
- And I repeated the setting for a few times, I think at least I do one hundred setting, I know, it takes time, maybe I can try more next time.
The Result(it’s not perfect!)
After about an hour, I definitely felt like I was improving. My sets were getting more consistent, and I was able to aim them better at the wall. They weren’t perfect, but they were a lot better than when I started.
I know I still have a long way to go, but it was a good start. I’m going to try to do this a few times a week and see if I can keep getting better. Maybe next time I’ll try to find a friend to practice with, so I can work on setting to an actual person!
