Okay, so today I decided to finally get a solid understanding of the rules of volleyball. I’ve played a few pickup games here and there, but honestly, I was mostly just running around and hitting the ball, hoping for the best. Time to change that!

First, I watched a couple of YouTube videos. Nothing fancy, just some basic “Volleyball Rules for Beginners” type stuff. Gotta start somewhere, right?
Basic Gameplay
- Started with the serve. Apparently, you gotta stand behind the back line. Makes sense, I guess.
- Then, I learned about the three hits per side rule. Bump, set, spike – that’s the classic combo, I gathered.
- Also each team have maximun 6 players.
Scoring Points
Scoring. Now I have learnt that it is a rally point, which means every rally a point would be scored, no matter who served the ball.
Fouls and Violations
- There were also net touches, so that touching the net with any body parts is not allowed while the ball is in play.
- Foot faults, I needed to pay attention that stepping over the line while serving is a no-no.
- And double hits, one player cannot hit the ball twice in a row.
After getting a handle on the basics from the videos, I grabbed my friend, and we headed to the park. We don’t have a net, so we just drew a line in the sand. Close enough!
We practiced serving for a bit. I definitely need more work on that – my serves kept going all over the place. My friend’s were a little better, but we both struggled to get them consistently over the “net.”
Then we tried some bumping and setting. We managed to get a few rallies going, which was pretty cool! It’s way harder than it looks to control the ball and get it to your teammate accurately.

We even attempted some spikes, though they were pretty pathetic. Mostly, we were just laughing at ourselves and having fun. We definitely didn’t look like professional volleyball players, but hey, we were learning!
By the end, I felt like I had a much better grasp of the rules. I still need a ton of practice, but at least now I know what I’m supposed to be doing. Next time, I plan to find an actual net and maybe some more people to play with. Baby steps, right?
