Okay, so I’ve been on a retro gaming kick lately, and I stumbled upon this game called “Popeye’s Beach Volleyball” for the Game Gear. I remembered playing it years ago, and I had this hazy memory of it being kinda fun. So, I decided to give it another shot.

First things first, I needed to find the game. Digging through my old boxes in the attic didn’t work. So, I had do something else. I tried looking for it online, and luckily, I was able to find it.
Next up, the emulator. I already had a Game Gear emulator set up on my computer from a previous retro gaming binge (don’t judge!), so I didn’t have to mess around with downloading and installing anything new. Phew!
Firing It Up
I loaded up the ROM, and boom – there it was, the familiar title screen with Popeye and Bluto flexing their muscles. Brought back some memories, I tell ya.
The game itself is pretty simple. You can play as Popeye, Olive Oyl, Bluto, or Wimpy. Each character has slightly different stats, like power and speed, but honestly, it doesn’t make a huge difference. It’s beach volleyball, so you’re hitting the ball back and forth, trying to score points. The controls are basic – move around, jump, and hit the ball. You can do a super shot, but it’s kinda finicky to pull off.
I started with a single-player game against Bluto. The first few matches were a breeze. He was pretty slow and predictable. I was smashing the ball past him, feeling like a pro. Then, the difficulty ramped up real quick. Suddenly, he was diving all over the place, returning my shots with crazy power. It got tough!
- The Good: It’s simple, pick-up-and-play fun. Perfect for a quick gaming session when you’re bored. The characters are recognizable, and the graphics are, well, Game Gear graphics. They’re not amazing, but they’re charming in a retro way.
- The Bad: It gets repetitive fast. There’s not much variety in the gameplay. The AI can be either super dumb or ridiculously hard, with no in-between. And the super shot mechanic is more frustrating than useful.
I played for about an hour, messing around with different characters and trying to beat the tournament mode. I managed to win a few rounds, but I never actually made it to the end. I’m not that dedicated, hah!

Overall, “Popeye’s Beach Volleyball” is a fun little distraction. It’s not a game I’d spend hours and hours on, but for a quick dose of retro gaming nostalgia, it hits the spot. I’m glad I revisited it, even if it was just to remember how frustrating Bluto could be! Maybe I’ll try to beat that tournament mode someday… maybe.
