Okay, so today I wanted to get a better handle on the different parts of a volleyball game. I’ve watched it on TV, but I never really got all the pieces, you know? So I decided to dive in and figure it out.

First, Figuring Out the Basics
First, I watched a few games online. I mean, you gotta start somewhere, right? I focused on a couple of college games ’cause it seemed like a good level – not too crazy, not too slow.
Then, Breaking it Down
I started noticing there’s more to it than just hitting the ball over the net. Here’s what I picked up:
- The Serve: Obvious, I know, but it’s how every point starts. Some people do that jump serve thing, which looks pretty cool.
- The Pass (or Bump): This is when someone receives the serve. They kinda get low and use their forearms. I tried it out in my living room – almost broke a lamp!
- The Set: Usually the second touch. Someone pops the ball up in the air all nice and easy for the hitter.
- The Hit (or Spike): BOOM! This is the big attack. They jump up and try to slam the ball down on the other side.
- The Block: The other team jumps up at the net to try and stop the hit. It’s like a wall.
- The Dig: If the hit gets past the block, someone on defense dives to try and keep the ball alive. Super athletic!
Putting it All Together
So, after watching and, uh, experimenting a bit, I realized a volleyball game is basically a cycle of these things. Serve, pass, set, hit, and then either a block or a dig. It goes back and forth like that until someone messes up or the ball hits the floor.
I even tried to follow along with a game and call out each part as it happened. “Pass! Set! Hit! Oh, nice block!” My dog thought I was crazy, but it actually helped me understand the flow of the game better.
I still have some to learn, such as the rotations and different positions, perhaps next time I can figure those out too!
