Alright, so, the other day I decided it was time to give the entertainment system in my 2018 Kia Sportage SX a bit of a facelift. Honestly, it wasn’t too bad to start with, but I just felt like it could use a little something extra, you know?

First things first, I did a bit of digging online. I mean, who doesn’t these days when they’re about to mess with their car, right? I stumbled upon some forum where people were talking about updates for the navigation system. Apparently, there’s an update I could do. Sounded simple enough.
So, I grabbed a USB stick. I made sure it had enough space, just to be safe. They said you might need up to 64GB, which seemed like a lot, but whatever. I figured it was better to be prepared, you know, just in case it turns out that I need to do that.
Then, following some advice I found on another thread, I took a picture of my current system info. You know, the software version and all that stuff. Just in case things went sideways, I’d have a record of what I started with.
Next, I tried to actually do the update. I thought it’d be as easy as it was on my Telluride. I just plugged in the USB and followed the prompts, but no luck. The system in the Sportage just wouldn’t take the update. It was pretty frustrating, to be honest. I mean, it was a breeze on the Telluride, so I didn’t really know why I was having so much trouble with my Sportage.
I spent a good chunk of time trying different things. You know, different USB ports, restarting the system, the whole nine yards. Nothing worked. It was like the car just didn’t want to cooperate.
Eventually, I found this other guide that showed how to check the software version. Turns out, I had to press the Setup key, or something. It’s not hard, but who has time to read the car manual, right?

Here are what I did basically:
- Find Info: I looked up online how to update the system.
- Get USB: I made sure I had a big enough USB drive.
- Take Picture: I snapped a pic of my system’s info before starting.
- Try Update: I plugged in the USB and tried to update, but it didn’t work.
- Check Version: I figured out how to check the software version using the Setup key.
So, yeah, that’s where I’m at now. Still haven’t gotten the update to work, but I’m not giving up. I guess the next step is to dive deeper into those forums and see if anyone else has had this issue. Or maybe I’ll just take it to the dealer. We’ll see. I just really wanted to do it myself, you know? It’s like a challenge now. Anyway, I’ll keep you guys posted on how it goes. Maybe my little adventure here will help someone else out there trying to do the same thing.
